What is this book about?

During the war in the Pacific, more airmen than you can imagine were lost during training accidents and routine missions. Unbroken is a story about one such airman who, after his B-24 aircraft experiences engine problems and goes down in the Pacific, survives for weeks on the open ocean only to be taken a prisoner by the Japanese. After spending two years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, Lieutenant Louis Zamperini comes out of the war both a hero and troubled man.

Prior to the war, Louis was an Olympic runner. After the war, he tries once again to regain his former stature. While training for the 1948 Olympics he re-injures himself and ends his dream of returning to running. All of Louis’ problems begin to consume him leading to martial issues and alcoholism. One night his wife and friends persuade him to attend a Billy Graham meeting. The rest you will need to read for yourself…

Why should you read this book?

I highly recommend Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. She does an awesome job of presenting a complex story about one of our nation’s heroes. Her writing makes it easy for the reader to enter into the story and relate.

Question: Have you read this book? If you have, what are your thoughts?
